Honoring our Veterans is an important part of Stony Brook University’s culture. Stony Brook knows how important it is to celebrate our heroes every day. We are home to the Long Island State Veterans Home operated by the Health Sciences Center, which serves as a place of comfort and care for every generation of veteran. Additionally, every year around Veterans Day, Stony Brook holds a ceremony honoring those who have served. This year the ceremony was held on November 5th in the Student Activities Auditorium. The keynote speaker was Captain Shannon Meehan, Retired U.S. Army and author of “Beyond Duty.” Captain Meehan shared his story and why support for veterans, especially those suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder have made him the important advocate he is today.

Additionally on Saturday November 8th, Stony Brook University held Armed Forces Day at the football game against James Madison University. The day paid homage to the veterans from World War Two, the Vietnam War and the Korean War who were present, (some of whom are shown below) as well as a riveting half time tribute from the Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band. The half time show included the military anthems of the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, The U.S. Marine Corps, The U.S. Air Force and the U.S. Coast Guard as well as America Beautiful, conducted by Director Emeritus of the Marching Band, John Leddy. The band sounded amazing, and looked even more amazing in their We Love USA formation. Watch the video below!
