Community of Awesome
The Simple Joys of Stony Brook University

The “Community of Awesome” is a campus-wide initiative started in the Fall of 2011 at Stony Brook University from the Office of the Dean of Students and two students, Denise D. and Rob D., that brings together students, faculty and staff to celebrate and appreciate the AWESOME simple joys of the university community. Did someone hold the door open for you when your hands were full of books? Tell us! Did a student make your day when he or she thanked you for your help? Let us know! Is there a place on campus that makes you happy? Fill us in! Shout out the people, places, and things in our community that help brighten your day and it will be posted on our blog, communityofawesome.wordpress.com, which is currently maintained by Emma L.

This initiative is inspired by the 1000 Awesome Things Blog and “The Book of Awesome” by Neil Pasricha and is being coordinated by student leaders of the Stony Brook University Community Pledge

Hi, My name is Seth and I’m working on a story for the Statesman about this blog. Would you be interested in answering a few questions about how it was established and where you see it going?

I just wanted to tell you, all, it is a bright spot in my day each time one of the Community of Awesome posts appears in my mail box. I have worked in the Melville Library for almost 30 years, and each day I learn something new about this campus I didn’t know before. Thank you for such an “awesome” idea!
