Stony Brook Undergraduate Student Government and Student Activities hosted the annual Back to the Brook Concert last night in the Island Federal Credit Union Arena. This year’s feature artist was Walk The Moon, best known for their hit song “Shut Up and Dance.”

During their finale performance of “Shut Up and Dance,” they introduced a surprise guest artist, our very own Spirit of Stony Brook Marching Band!

Students flood the Academic Mall, eager to get involved in the many clubs and organizations offered on campus.

Students flood the academic mall, eager to get involved in the many clubs and organizations offered on campus.

Yesterday the office of Student Activities hosted the first of two involvement fairs right here in the academic mall.  Each year Stony Brook’s clubs and organizations get together during campus lifetime to recruit for and answer questions regarding their specific club.

With over 425 officially recognized clubs and organizations on campus, there is something for everyone to discover.  This week’s fair included clubs like the Strength Club, which focuses on weightlifting and power-lifting;  Stony Brook Live, which is a musical group that provides entertainment at different campus events; The Hula-Hoop Enthusiasts, who enjoy learning about the different ways to hula-hoop; and many of our fraternities and sororities.

If you missed this week’s involvement fair, there’s still a chance to check out more next week, September 9th, during campus lifetime.

Thank you to Student Activities for hosting this awesome event to help students get involved during their time here at Stony Brook!

The Hula-Hoop Enthusiasts display their awesome talents to attract members to their club.

#299: Black History Month Opening Ceremony

Today, January 28th during Campus Lifetime, Stony Brook kicked off Black History Month with its opening ceremony. The keynote speaker was Frederick K. Brewington, ESQ, a respected lawyer and community advocate. He transformed the SAC Auditorium into a courtroom, addressing senior administrative members of the University as fellow council and judges. The audience became the jury, as Mr. Brewington made his case to them, presenting the evidence of past injustices, and his hopes for the future. He also tied into his statement Stony Brook Black History Month’s theme of “Sankofa”, which means “it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot.” Mr. Brewington urged the Stony Brook community to not forget the past and the lessons learned, as they are extremely important to our present and for the betterment of the future. Mr. Brewington was extremely engaging and a great individual to kick off Black History Month.

Shout out to the Co-Chairs of the Black History Month Committee: Dr. Jarvis Watson from EOP/AIM and Dr. Zebulon Miletsky a professor in the Africana Studies department, as well as the entire Black History Month Committee of students, faculty and staff for putting together a wonderful event.

On Wednesday January 7th, three local elementary schools (Setauket Elementary, Tackan Elementary and Samoset Elementary) were invited to the Stony Brook Women’s Basketball game against the University of Vermont for the second annual Kids Day. 800 Sea Pups filled the arena to watch the Seawolves defeat the Catamounts 60-38. After the game, the Stony Brook University Trauma Center trained the Sea Pups on topics such as pool safety, pedestrian safety, fire safety and calling 911 in an emergency.
